Makita 2012NB 240v Portable Planer Thicknesser

Great easy to use practical piece of equipment

I bought this to replace a Triton which, broke whilst under warranty. Although this was going to be replaced free of charge, excellent service FFX, unfortunately there were none available and I couldn’t afford to wait for the replacement to arrive. I putt the monetary difference too and upgraded to the Mikita. Why didn’t I get this in the first place? The build quality is amazing, so strong, sturdy everything that I have come to expect from Mikita. Straight out of the box there was no snipe, with the Triton I had to allow 150mm to each piece so the snipe could be removed, leaving enough straight stock. There is massive difference in the loudness of the two machines, the Makita being so much quieter. There is a depth stop making repeated cuts easy and precise. Would I recommend the Makita? Undoubtedly. Yes it’s more expensive, you do however get what you pay for.

Superb machine. Only had it just over a week but used it a number of time already and it gives fantastic results. I have heard people comment that other makes are noisy but the Makita 2012NB is really NOT noisy. Service from FFX was faultless.

Well engineered and powerful thickness planer.

I have only used this thicknesser for about 2 weeks and as far as I can tell it is an excellent product. The first pieces I put through the machine came out as though they were sanded to about 220 grit. It is the first time I have used a thicknesser so have nothing to compare it to, but I am extremely pleased with the Makita 2012NB and the results it produces.

It does everything it says it does and planes to a lovely smooth finish.

It has performed flawlessly so far. It is very easy to get a good finish as long as yo don't try and bite a phenomenal amount at a time. The feed mechanism is smooth and reliable.

Does exactly what it says

Only had the unit for about a week, but so far have been very pleased with it. It's sturdy and the height adjustment seems reliable and the cut has been very smooth.

Great piece of kit! I chose this machine because of its size and weight. It is heavy but manageable at 28kg. Other machines that are slightly lower in price were both larger and heavier. As a hobby woodworker/DIYer I was apprehensive about spending this much on a machine but the results are worthwhile and I have used it far more than I expected. The machine is robustly constructed and the height adjustment is consistent and precise. If like me you have limited space in your workshop and need a genuinely portable machine then I recommend this machine. Purchased from FFX who usually deliver the next day, even at a weekend.

Lovely bit of kit. Have been using it to smooth and thickness sapele? from old pallets - very hard wood - but beautiful finish with this tool.

Brilliant planer - I had to replace my Triton TPT125 after it packed up - that is a great planer for DIY use but this is more like a professional one which is just what I needed

I’ve only used this on a few practice sessions. I bought it for a few projects I have planned for after Xmas. For the few times I’ve used it so far I am very pleased with it. The reason for only four stars is because I haven’t used it for any projects yet but I am confident it will do the job required of it.

I had an old Axminster cast iron oplaner thicknesser, problem was it just kept going out of alignment, and was only 250mm. As it took ages to set it up i decided to bite the bullet and buy the Makita, its portable and solidly built, and powerful too. It has a fixed table and a moving cutter head to vary the thickness, this means you can set it up on a bench and have fixed height in and out feed tables. It performs perfectly, i am considering going for the spiral cutter upgrade in the future but for now this is perfect for hard and soft woods. FFX sent this quickly and in perfect condition. Recommended bit of kit. Of course it only thicknesses, shame Makita dont do a matching jointer.

another ace product from makita!

I had a Triton planer thicknesser prior to this which worked it's ass off for 3 years. And I destroyed the feed rollers by my own stupidity. I could have replaced rollers for £50 . But thought I would treat myself to a more upmarket Makita . What a mistake . The feed rollers on the Makita are crap and it's nothing but a pain to use. If this wasn't my busiest time off the year I would have returned this Makita. The good people at ffx offered a return even after me throwing out the box . Highly recommend ffx. But don't recommend Makita planer thicknesser. I honestly think I will be buying the metabo thicknesser very soon as the Makita one will drive me nuts. I don't even think it's faulty I just think it's a design issue with the feed rollers and the springs there mounted on.

Superb planer, smooth beyond comprehension. No need to sand after. Only just got it so will review again when had good use.

Good product

Disappointing long delay in getting this from FFX due to Makita out of stock issues. I eventually cancelled my order with FFX after waiting several months without a getting any reason although I had contacted both FFX and Makita direct. In the end I noticed that the item was eventually available in Sep so I ordered on the 19th ( Sun ) and it was delivered next day - excellent service

Fast delivery from FFX Ltd. Excellent build quality from Makita, like the incremental cut height adjustment and extraction hood feature. Produces a smooth finish and is quiet in operation.Too early to comment on long term reliability but I am reasonably confident this thicknesser will give years of good service

Makita's 2012NB is a good machine. Very sturdy, with no discernible movement when running through planks if wood. However, the fold down tables cannot be levelled to the bed. It's completely impossible. The only thing I could do us build an auxiliary bed with adjustable feet that goes through the machine. I then built a sled to which I hot glued the warped planks with shims. The finish is beautiful, but takes a lot of work to get there. Very little snipe, which can easily be sanded away.

Bought it couple of months ago and I can say that Is a great quality machine, very silent comparing with other brands ... I’ve been planning some oak and the results are close to perfection ...

Arrived when they said. Well packed. Worked out of the box.

Only used it today for the first time, the finish is unbelievably good, on pine and beech, no noticeable snipe. The machine is much quieter than I expected, another plus.

I used my Makita to 280 x 280 oak planing. There was no problem. I thought the machine was a toy but it is not There is a very strong engine Vacuum cleaner is an unbeatable extra equipment. You need good vacuum cleaner

Very pleased with this - cuts uniformly and to perfect smoothness on a variety of soft and hardwoods. Minimal snipe (almost undetectable with a small piece) and does not labor even with a 300mm wide maple board. Feels very well made. Its quiet (for a thicknesser) - it whispers in comparison to the Clarke one a neighbour has. At 27 kg its just about liftable on and off by bench. Requires 75mm tubing to connect to dust extractor.
